From its humble beginnings in the Epic
Games studio in September 2017, Fortnite Battle Royale has taken video gaming and
eSport to a whole new level, being second only to League of Legends as the most
popular eSport game (as of February 2020). With Season 2 of Chapter 2 drawing
to a close, the world eagerly awaits word of when we can expect to see Season 3
emerge. So, where did it all begin?
Origins
Epic Games first released Save the World in September 2017 as a survival game for up to four players. Later that year, it released “Battle Royale,” a game for up to 100 players. After critical acclaim, Epic followed up with Creative a year later. This differed from Battle Royale in that the players could create their own battlegrounds and scenarios.
Although Save the World and Creative were hugely successful, it was Battle Royale that really took off and became a multi-million-dollar eSport that it is today, with more than 125 million registered players worldwide.. This is partly because Battle Royale was made available on the Nintendo, iOS, Android platforms, and the original PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Macintosh operating systems, making it accessible to a much wider audience.
With this success, awards flooded in, and in 2019, Fortnite took top prize at the DICE Awards, the Golden Joystick Awards, the Italian Video Game Awards, the Webby Awards, and the National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers Awards.
The Fortnite World Cup
The inaugural Fortnite Battle Royale World
Cup was held last year in the Arthur Ash Stadium in Flushing, NY. With a total prize of $30 million at stake, Bugha, a teenager from Pennsylvania, won the top prize of $3 million.
This is now an annual event, and Fortnite World Cup 2020 is scheduled to take place in late July, COVID-19 permitting, at a venue yet to be announced.
eSports Betting
The growth of eSports over the last few years
is evidenced by the massive increase in betting possibilities. Many mainstream online Bookmakers, like Bet365, Betway, and Pinnacle, now have dedicated eSport sections. In-play betting has added to the appeal of these online
games, with Unikrn and Bitfight joining in the fun.
Going forward
Chapter 2, Season 2 was due to end in April
2020, but this has been extended to June 4. Provided there is no delay (and
bearing in mind we are living in unprecedented times with COVID-19 forcing the closure of many businesses and home-working for those who can), the new season
should follow immediately
So, what changes can we expect to see?
Well, Season 2 introduced a spy theme, and it looks as though that will continue. Epic says there are more updates and features to come, but what of Season 3? Certainly, the Secret
Service aspect will be there, with new modes and zones to infiltrate.
The future for Fortnite Battle
Royale and the Fortnite Battle
Royale World Cup looks good, but times move quickly and three
months is a long time in this business. Will this delay prove critical? Only
time will tell.
